It's Harvest Time

We’ve had some exciting new initiatives start in pre-k in the past week. See the letter sent home in Thursday folders about our the mindfulness and kindness curriculum we began on Wednesday. So far kids have practiced taking deep breaths, and paying attention on the outside (listening) and on the inside (what am I feeling right now?).

Last Thursday we had our first visit from Joan at Bonnyvale Environmental Ed Center (BEEC). She’ll join us once a week for some environmental education lessons. Last week we listened to a book about a brave squirrel, then became squirrels ourselves, hiding nuts around the forest.

We continue working on our harvest theme, this week focusing on flowers and seeds. We’ve harvested sunflowers and calendula, dissected flowers with tweezers and popsicle sticks, and  used watercolors to paint pictures of sunflowers. We’ll be harvesting buckwheat seeds out of the garden on Thursday or Friday, and will eventually grind them into flour for pancakes. Doesn’t pre-k have the most fun?!

Joan from Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center visits us in the woods every Thursday.

Last week we heard a story about Earl the Squirrel...

...and got to hide nuts in the woods, just like little squirrels.

Hiding those nuts!

We did a lot of collaborative painting this week. All of the paintings will be turned into a "Kindness Garden" mural in the classroom next week.

Our dramatic play center is now a restaurant.

Kids are taking turns setting the table, being the customers, the wait staff, and the chefs.

It's been a beautiful week for outdoor eating.

Harvesting calendula and finding butterflies in the garden.

We found another red eft, and practiced gently passing it from friend to friend.
