We Love the Snow!

It’s been such a treat to see this class slide right back into our routines after the long break. They truly missed each other, and the play has been so kind, positive, and inclusive in the past few days.

The snow is a real gift, and changes our outdoor landscape quite a bit. We’ve been getting ready to have some fires out in the woods, and have told stories, learned our fire rules, and have practiced by boiling water for tea using our Kelly Kettle (see picture below). Today we’ll have our first fire at the fire circle, and hopefully will cook a delicious snack in our dutch oven.

In the classroom we’ve continued our work with blocks, focusing on building towers with different materials. The structures being created around the classroom are very creative, and kids are starting to notice that a wide base makes for a more sturdy tower.

We’ve also started to learn about the winter solstice. Don’t forget about our solstice celebration happening on the 14th of December. If you have any glass jars (any size) to donate towards  lantern-making please send them in!

Finally, don’t forget about the Positive Parenting workshop happening with Janice Stockman next Thursday the 6th. Dinner and childcare is provided, starting at 5:30.

Working on a strong base for his tower.

Foam blocks have been a popular addition to the building materials.

We set up a "listening station" in our book nook! Kids have learned how to press play on the cd player, turn the page of the book when they hear the bell, and listen to the story with a friend.

Snow in the woods has lead to all sorts of new play.

Here's our Kelly Kettle. We build a little twig fire in the bottom metal compartment, then put a kettle of water on top to boil. It's a perfect way to make tea on a cold day in the woods!

Admiring a friend's "hot tub".

Different creative materials for this tower.

Look at the strong base for this tower! The top fell over many times, but the base always held strong.

We have to climb over some big snowbanks to get into the woods.

Transportation is a popular theme - these guys are driving a fast car!

With sharp eyes this little girl found a slug in the snow...

...and after careful observation we saw that it was alive and still moving!
