December = Snow!

What a joy it is to spend time in the snow with your children! Don’t be surprised if they’re coming home EXTRA tired - it’s hard work trudging through the snow.

We always spend the first couple of days back from a long break reviewing the rules and routines, but this group has really been able to jump back into the swing of things. We’ve been harvesting worm castings for our upcoming market on Tuesday the 10th, and have been making some interesting observations and setting up some experiments with worms and a rotting pumpkin. On Wednesday we started making lanterns with our 4th grade buddies for the Solstice Celebration on Friday Dec 13th.

Check out the blog for pictures of our first fire in the woods that happened the Friday before the Thanksgiving break. Thanks to Bay’s dad Robin for building and tending the fire!

As you’re thinking about good presents to get your children for the holidays, here are a couple of ideas:
  • Child-sized scissors (great for fine-motor practice!)
  • Warm wool socks
  • Good snow mittens

Finally, we want to extend an invitation to families to join us for circle time. It’s a great way to get a sense of how our classroom runs, and is a fun and quick way to participate in the classroom. You are always welcome to share a skill/song/story, but are equally as welcome just to visit. We have circle every day from about 9:15-9:30. Let me know if you’d like to come!

Our dramatic play center has turned into a camp site, complete with tent, sleeping bag, fire, and cooking equipment.

Cooking potato hash over the fire just before the break. It's amazing how different our woods look now!

These guys are navigating the rabbit warren at the edge of the woods.

Everyone who tried the potato hash gave it two thumbs up!

A great way to snack in the woods.

And back from Thanksgiving break we got right into "harvesting" worm castings for our winter market.

We had to look very carefully to make sure we got all the worms. We even found some babies!

So much snow! We only had two boots (and about 100 mittens) fall off on Tuesday. 😄

We had to climb some big snowbanks in order to get into the woods!

Untracked powder - a preschoolers dream. It didn't look like this for long!

Cleaning the mud kitchen.

A snow nest for two.

This team worked hard building a snow fort.

We have some hardy kiddos who are still using our potty out in the woods!

Climbing out at the end of woods time.

There's a perfect little sledding hill behind the school on the playground.
Our playground time at the end of the day has been filled with amazing sled runs. Lots of smiles!
