It's that time of year when we (mostly) have our hands free of mittens, and that means lots of digging in the soil. And digging in the soil means...WORMS! Amongst the many other interests guiding the play of this class, worms have been quite popular this week. We've read some books about worms, built a worm habitat in our terrarium, and collected many many worms.
The richness of play we've seen these past weeks is so wonderful. Children are expanding their social interactions and playing with peers they don't typically play with, and they're staying with their play themes for extended periods of time. We know that play is the "work" of children, and it warms our teacher hearts to see that these children are so good at playing!

We dug in many places to find worms, but the garden was the real jackpot.
These three are taking turns using some inquiry tools and writing in the notebook from the inquiry basket.
Our May self-portraits took a close look at skin color. We had some great conversations about how we all have different amounts of melanin in our skin.
Some more inquiry work - these two are working on some books about their discoveries at the fire.
VERY close observation of the fire.
We harvested rhubarb from the garden last Friday...
...And made rhubarb crisp! Most children really loved it and came back for seconds.
