Oh boy, do we love this snow! The cold temps haven't slowed this crew down. In fact, moving through deep snow is so much work kids are shedding layers more often than complaining of cold. That said, keep sending the warm clothes! It doesn't look like this cold is going to lift any time soon.
I recently read an interesting study titled For Young Children, Finger Counting Helps Develop More Abstract Skills. It's about how effective finger counting can be as a tool to help children develop their math skills. Figuring out how to count while using fingers is both a motor skill, and a math skill - it's tricky. Ask your child to show you what we do when a teacher says "Get your math hands ready!" You can practice counting any time, and using fingers as you go.
Enjoy some pictures from the week!
These kiddos ar excavating some shapes from the sand.
We're working a lot on math vocabulary right now, and shape names are on the list.
This structure started out as a race car.
We had a real adventure getting into Wildwood Forest on Monday!
Then we decided that a tunnel would be the most direct route.
We love crawling! It's a great way for kids to develop the core strength that will ultimately feed their fine-motor development.
So much fresh, untracked snow.
We had fun measuring the snow at different spots in the forest.
This week we spent some time thinking about how to make buildings sturdy.
After looking at some pictures the kids had some good ideas: "Put more on the sides," or "Put more stuff on the bottom."
We left the race car up for a couple of days and watched it transform.
Our hike to Wildwood Forest involves climbing and walking along the ridge of a giant snow bank - so fun!
We found a LOT of mouse tracks in the snow, and followed these through the forest and into a tiny hole.
Our January self-portraits focused on what our skin looks like. We spent some time matching different skin tones to our own.
The kids first painted themselves without clothes, then added clothing the next day. Check them out hanging outside our classroom.
Snow mermaids
We ended the week with a fun cooking project with Farmer Sarah.
Ask your child about the herbed yogurt dip. It was delicious!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone, and stay warm!
