Animals in Winter

Our irregular schedule the past couple of weeks has made it feel like I haven’t seen your children very much recently! Despite the inconsistencies, we’ve been having fun in school talking and learning about what animals do to survive in winter. The kids have met Mrs. Nutkin, the (felt) squirrel, who caches acorns in different hiding places around her tree. We’ve gotten some good traction out of the story, practicing counting the acorns that she hides, and later this week we’ll even try hiding some of our own acorns out in the woods.

The snow and ice have made for lots of changes to our outdoor classroom. We’ve loved digging in the snow, and have had just as much fun sliding on the ice. There were a couple of days last week that were perfect for tracking, and we even found fox tracks  going right through our woods.

We continue to work on our Kindness Curriculum. We’ve been practicing paying attention to feelings on the inside, and recognizing that even where there are lots of noises and distractions we can find a quiet place inside ourselves.

Tracking deer and fox through the woods.

We found an amazing upturned tree on our tracking expedition.

We made bread, then shaped it into letters - delicious!

Can you match the track with the animal?

New "quiet choice" activity - magnetic cars.

These guys found a fishing hole right on the playground.

Ice is so much fun to explore.

Our tarp came down over the weekend...again.

So  many treasures stuck in the ice - here's a piece of fabric. I wonder what else the melting will reveal this spring?

More ice exploration

This was before the rain.
