Into the Swing of Things

We’re settling into the swing of things here in pre-k land! This week we started a new unit focusing on Harvest. We’ve explored the garden looking for food that we can harvest, have sung some harvest songs, and read books that have to do with harvest and food. We’ve even had a chance to harvest and prepare some of our own food! As we work through our harvest theme we’ll focus on different plant parts every week. This week’s focus is leaves, and our harvest has included herbs and kale. In the coming weeks we’ll move on to flowers, fruit, and roots.

Today we also start a new and exciting program. Every Thursday we’ll have Joan Carey from Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center (BEEC) come to work with the pre-k out in the woods. Joan will do some reading, games, and exploration around a whole host of nature-based topics. We’re so excited to get started with her!

On Thursday October 11 we have our first field trip of the year to the Gaines Farm! Please see the permission slip sent home in Thursday folders, and let us know if you can join us. If you haven’t been it’s definitely worth a visit!

Worm soup?

We used hand clippers to cut sticks just the right length for binding our "All About Me" books.

We have fun inside the classroom too!

Some children explored the woods with clipboards, looking for interesting things to draw.

The rain left our pots full of water, perfect for soup!

We went on an expedition to the garden to harvest some leaves (chives, parsley, basil, thyme), and used scissors to cut them up for some yogurt herb dip.

A rainy day was the perfect opportunity for new rain gear!

Snipping herbs with scissors - great fine-motor practice!
