A Field Trip and a Pumpkin Factory

As always, it’s been an eventful week. Last Thursday we did some rain collection experiments with Joan from BEEC, and on Friday we had a visit from the Guilford Fire Department. See the family tip below to learn about some of the important take-aways from the visit. On Tuesday we were joined by many families for an amazing trip to the Gaines Farm. I’ll put lots of pictures on the blog this week for those of you who missed it.

As the weather gets colder it’s important to start sending your child to school with good warm clothes. It’s not too early for snow pants and boots, and hats and mittens are a must. If at all possible, layers that aren’t cotton are great - think wool or fleece sweaters and socks. Our woods are shaded, and always about 5 degrees colder than everywhere else!

Here are a few other highlights from the week:
  • We created a “pumpkin factory” in our outdoor classroom, complete with a hammering station, drilling station, nail extraction station, and pumpkin drum set.
  • We threshed buckwheat by banging it with sticks on a giant tarp - fun!
  • We read The Little Red Hen, and did some reenactment of the story.
  • Children worked on their “All About Me” books, adding a page about their favorite foods.
  • We did leaf rubbings with crayons and paper.
Apple printing is messy stuff!

Apple prints...plus a little bit of glitter!

We constructed houses to keep little mice dry from the rain. These guys stayed dry all week!

Perfect hollow stump and door for a mouse house.

Another great spot for a little house.

Stump acrobatics

We do cooking projects on Friday - last week was apple rings!

An amazing day at the Gaines Farm

Our Pumpkin Factory: Some kids hammered nails in, some used a screw driver to take nails out, and others drilled holes with a hand drill.

Focused workers

Our pumpkin drum set - apologies for the poor picture!
