We can’t believe our luck having a dry week for the first time in ages. Kids have been loving the snow, and our woods time is full of new explorations including fort building, shoveling and raking snow, ice experiments and ornament making, and general woods beautification.
Our building and construction theme is going strong, as we now have blocks in nearly every center in the classroom. Kids have built small animal homes with woodland blocks in the dramatic play center, towers continue to be popular in our blocks center, and much to everyone’s delight we have a new lego table.
Our kindness work continues to provide students with opportunities to practice social-emotional skills. We’ve been working hard on reinforcing strategies for handling big emotions, and have been teaching children some conflict-resolution skills. See the “tips” box in the newsletter for some information about what we do when we make a mistake.
On Thursday we start making lanterns with our 4th grade buddies for our Solstice Celebration next week. Let us know if you’ll be able to make it on the 14th so we can get a headcount for dinner. 4th graders will make a soup, and pre-k will make some cornbread. If there are any families who would be willing to bring a dessert we would greatly appreciate it!
Finally, don’t forget that tonight is our Positive Parenting workshop with Janice Stockman from 5:30-7:00.
We've been experimenting making ice ornaments - such a fun way to decorate the woods!
We've also been decorating the "Rain House" - can you see the stars hanging from the rafters?
The introduction of legos has made for some focused play time :)
The entrance to a warewolf den
It was so warm on Monday we got out the paints!
Buddy painting - a great way to work on friendship skills.
Tower building with magnetiles
Our first fire was last Thursday! Joan came and did her nature-lesson with us around the fire - a dramatic reading of Jan Brett's The Mitten.
After hearing Joan's story the kids got to work acting it out on our stage.
Inside the classroom we've looked at pictures of different towers around the world...
This is a recreation of the Eiffel Tower!
Kids did a great job being safe and following our fire rules - we're excited for more!
We had a few great sledding days - many opportunities for turn-taking!
