Changes

The changes we’ve seen these past two weeks have been amazing: Snow in the woods has melted (all but the last few snowbanks), there are flowers blooming outside the entrance to the school, and kids are shedding jackets any chance they get! It’s still cold in the woods in the morning, so keep sending your kiddos to school with hats and mittens and warm layers.

Our study of transportation has taken on many forms in the past two weeks, as we’ve added elements to our car shop, have used toy cars in multiple play centers (ramps, play-dough, ooblek, blocks), made road signs, read books featuring cars and trucks, and made maps. Outside we’ve started introducing different tools to students, and there’s been some very eager sawing, drilling, screwing, and hammering in the past few days.

We’ve continued with fires, and have tried some delicious new recipes, including cinnamon buns and potato hash. Our class also prepared maple granola for the entire school as our March Harvest of the Month taste-test. As always, we still have opportunities for Friday fire-tenders.

A couple of important dates for you to note:
  • There will be NO SCHOOL for pre-k on Friday June 7th - this is a visiting day for next year’s pre-k class.
  • On Thursday May 2nd we’ll host a Teddy Bear Tea at 1:15. This is an event for younger siblings and other young children in our community. There will still be school that day for pre-k, but they won’t attend the event.
  • April is the Month of the Young Child. On Sunday from 10:00-12:00 there is an art opening at the River Gallery in Brattleboro with artwork from area preschool programs, including our very own classroom! If you can’t make it to the event on Sunday the show will be up for the month.

Kids have recently discovered the fun of hanging upside down on our dome climber.

Check out these fun cars!

A game of memory - the kids definitely beat the teacher!

These guys built a lift so they could fix the bottom of the car.

It was so windy on Monday in the woods that we decided to walk to the town garage instead.

It's finally warm enough for those little fingers to use our tools. This hammering stump is a favorite.

This guy found the first worm of spring!

A favorite spot

Look about 2/3 of the way up this tower, and you'll see that the top 1/3 is perfectly balanced on just one little block - impressive!

Kristine has been attempting to start flint and steel fires with the kids, but the last couple of attempts have been too wet for success.

Working with and hand-cranked drill and some screw drivers.
