This is it!

This is our last news letter of the year!

Our past two weeks have been filled with projects, and lots of fun outside time. Here are some of the highlights:
  • We planted dry beans and zinnias in our raised garden beds.
  • We opened a farm stand in our dramatic play center.
  • Our fairy village in the woods has grown and grown, and now includes a beach, doctor’s office, dentist office, and garden.
  • We started to learn about some nutrition concepts, following the guide of “red light”, “yellow light” and “green light” foods. Green light foods are foods that are the most healthy for you and good for you to eat any time. Yellow light foods are less nutritious but okay to eat in moderation, and red light foods are the ones that are okay to eat every once in a while.
  • We did an author study of Leo Leonni, and read and compared a number of his books.
  • We’re currently doing an author study of Eric Carle, and will do some Eric Care inspired collages next week.

We’ve also started talking about the end of the school year, and are working on wrapping up a few ongoing projects: binding our nature journals, making end-of-the-year thank you cards for classroom volunteers, and getting the classroom materials in order are big jobs right now.

The kids have been spending some time playing in the kindergarten classroom with Mrs. Duggan in the afternoons. We’ll do this a handful of times before the end of the school year so they’re comfortable and familiar with their teacher and classroom for next year.

Finally, “report card” narratives will go home with your child on the last day of school. The narrative will be a little bit shorter than the one you received in the winter, but will include some information about what to expect next year in kindergarten. This class is more than ready to tackle the challenges and play they’ll engage with next year!

Don’t forget about all of our upcoming events happening in the next week and a half (see “Important Dates”), and I hope you all can make it to the family cook out next Wednesday in the pre-k woods at 5:00. We’ll have hot dogs and s’mores, you bring a side dish to share (or just come!). Grandparents are welcome!

I know I speak for Erin, Kristine, and myself when I say it has been a true pleasure teaching your children this year. They are a special group, and inspire us, make us laugh, and let us remember the magic of childhood every day. Thank you!

The block center continues to be a favorite spot for many kids in the class.

Our outdoor easel makes large scale painting lots of fun.

Last week Joan brought some red efts for us to hold.

Carrying large sticks as a team must be one of the recurring play themes of early childhood.
