Is It Spring?

Our “doctor’s office” has been very busy this week, as these kiddos continue to love learning about the human body. This week we started talking about ways to take care of our body, and are learning in particular about “eating the rainbow” - the idea that eating a variety of brightly colored fruits and vegetables can provide a wide variety of nutritional benefits to our bodes. Our farm to school coordinator Sarah (Leah’s mom) has visited our circle time every morning to introduce a different color food. So far we’ve tried RED peppers and strawberries, ORANGE carrots, sweet potatoes, and clementines, and YELLOW bananas and star fruit. The kids are so eager to try these foods and learn about the ways that they help our bodies.

Next week we’re going to turn our learning about taking care of our bodies into a challenge called FIVE A DAY. The goal is to eat five fruits and vegetables a day. We’ll provide eating opportunities at school and will keep track of progress, and will also send a form home for you to keep track as well. You can participate too! Grown ups are the best models for healthy eating habits!

In other news related to our study of the human body, we’ve also recently started using a social skills curriculum called The Incredible Flexible You. In our first lessons we’ve learned that our brain is where we make our thoughts, and that everyone has their own unique thoughts. We’ll work towards creating an understanding that when we play with other people it helps if we have.a “group plan,” or at least an  understanding of what other people might be thinking.

Our outside play has been full of exploration this week, with the melting snow exposing all sorts of treasures (sticks!), and expeditions to find tracks and climb Mt. Everest. A big thanks to all the families who are able to come tend fires for us on Fridays - it’s always a treat to spend time with you!

Last Friday, before the weekend rain, there was a great otter slide on the playground!

a beautiful (fleeting) ice ornament

She found a perfect spot to hang her ornament.

A tippy table makes for great balance practice.

Hopefully you can see this video! Check out the cooperation, balance, physics - this is just loaded with good learning!

Engrossed in some natural-science reading.

droppers, liquid watercolors, snow

These kiddos loved sorting the different colored foods into a rainbow.

Our doctors office now has an x-ray machine, center where x-rays are created, and light table for reading x-rays. Also, a surgical table so all those broken bones can be fixed!

feeding the bunnies

This group came up with a "group plan" to build a city with roads, towers, and places for the bunnies to play.

learning about making surgical plans

Many kids were interested in whittling sticks this week...

such focus and concentration

Our road crew was hard at work - it's icy out there!

Help! An acorn is stuck in the ice!

Thanks to some friends, some problem solving, and some determination the acorn was freed.

Expeditions uncovered some interesting things this week.

A climb (without the rope!) up Mt. Everest

A giant track in the snow! Any guesses?
