Getting Into the Swing of Things

Happy fall! These days of frosty mornings and warm afternoons are some of my favorites. This week students are really starting to understand our routines and rules. We've had fun with art projects like painting rocks, decorating flags for the entrance to the woods, drawing with found charcoal, and decorating the woods. We've gone on expeditions to the "big kid" woods, and into the classroom to learn more about indoor materials. We've collected interesting leaves and rocks, and have had a lot of fun running and climbing in the woods. The pictures below tell a good story of the week.

A couple of important notes:

  • This Thursday (tomorrow) there is a GCS family forum, hosted by our principal Mr. Gagnon, nurse Ms. Michaud, counselor Ms. Albin, and behaviorist Ms. Bohl. Please feel free to join to share feedback and ask questions that you may have about being back in school. 6:30pm.
  • Next Tuesday 9/29 is PICTURE DAY! Zoe's mom, and amazing photographer Michelle Frehsee will be taking individual pictures of each student. More info about ordering to come.
  • Speaking of the Frehsee's - a BIG shout out and thanks for the beautiful and highly functional masks they made and donated to every kid in the school. We love them!
  • We're looking for donations of hand warmers and high quality (nice smelling!) hand sanitizer.
And finally, in case you weren't sure if you were part of a wonderful community here in Guilford, let me confirm that you are. Our leadership team put together a fundraiser for outdoor gear and equipment for GCS kids, and it has exceeded our goal of $30,000 in just a few short weeks! The response from the community has been truly amazing. Check it out on Gofund Me. We are equally amazed by the many volunteers who have helped to build new structures and outdoor spaces this summer and fall (thank you Dennis!). Our gratitude knows no ends. There's always more work to be done, so please let me know if you'd like to volunteer to help improve our outdoor learning spaces. THANK YOU!

Enjoy these pictures of your wonderful kids at play this week...

This guy found some charcoal from an old fire and turned it into drawing tools.

Decorating name flags - they'll soon fly them over the entrance to Wildwood Forest.

We found this fur on an expedition to the "big kid" woods, and one of the kiddos exclaimed "It's Yeti fur!!"

The doors to the shed make great easels.

So strong!

It's been so cold these past few morning's we've made tea with the Kelly Kettle. Build a twiggy fire in the pan, then put the hollow kettle on.

There's a donut-shaped chamber for water. It only takes a couple of minutes to boil!

Warm tea to warm the hands.

Obstacle courses also warm us up!
