Happy Halloween week! At circle we often take a minute to look up into the trees to notice any changes, and this week we noticed that nearly all the deciduous leaves have fallen. The past week has been full of wild weather, wild animals (mostly kids pretending to be doctor cats, actually), and lots of curiosity.
Conferences are coming up (sign up here), and before we meet in person we're having families fill out an Ages and Stages Questionnaire, a screening tool that is used in many pre-k programs around the state. I'll give you a copy in the coming days and you can bring it with you to the conference. Conferences can be in person (outside in Wildwood Forest) or via zoom. We are totally fine with whatever works best for you!
October is fire safety month, and while we normally have fire fighters come visit the school to teach the children about fire safety, this year we're taking on the challenge ourselves. We practice fire drills once a month here at school, and just like we train kids in emergency procedures at school, you should do the same at home. Create a clear plan, and practice it! Your children are also old enough to know their address and phone number, but you'll have to keep practicing and reviewing to make it stick. The Guilford Fire Department sent us some goodies that will be coming home with your kiddo on Friday.
Enjoy our pictures from the week!
Can you find the slug? We loved investigating the trail it left behind.
More slug investigating...
...which led to the realization that puffball mushrooms make great finger paint!
Then we took some old pumpkins, wet leaves, and made a slug habitat.
One of our recent mindfulness lessons focused on paying attention on the inside. Ask your child about their "belly buddies" and how we used them.

Kitties in their nest
We've found so much evidence of animals in the forest this week - as your child who's been having parties in the woods at night.
Monday was the prefect day for our first fire.
Our big project this week has been creating a dye from black walnut fruit. First we picked the nuts out of the fruit, and simmered the fruit over the fire.
We're dying masks (donated by Guilford parent Alix Joyal) so we can create animal masks for Halloween on Friday.
In they go!
The masks simmered for about an hour.
While they simmered we played!
And here they are, out of the dye bath, ready to be turned into woodland creatures!
