What strange weather for November, though I can't say anyone was complaining! Don't forget that next week the school building is closed so pre-k will be in session for mornings only (8:00-12:30). We WILL feed your child lunch.
This week the Diversity and Equity Committee will host story time and a lending library at the Guilford Free Library at 1:00. There is also a Coffee Chat on Friday morning at 8:30 am on talking to your child about race. Use this link to join on zoom. If you're interested in the topic but unable to join the coffee chat, check out this resource, 10 Tips for Teaching and Talking to Kids About Race from embracerace.org.
Our Kindness Curriculum has taken us from emotion recognition to social problem solving. Last week we introduced a magical pre-k tool called "Peace Wands." The peace wands help us solve social problems that inevitably arise in a pre-k classroom. I'm sure you can picture a familiar scenario in which two children want to play with the same toy (or more likely stick, in our case!). The very clear Peace Wand process involves taking turns talking and listening, brainstorming solutions to the problem, then choosing a solution and seeing if it works. Teachers will help coach the children through the process until they become familiar enough to use the peace wands on their own. As you might imagine, this class is really good at problem solving!
Enjoy our pictures from the week:
This was a very busy restaurant with children writing menus, taking orders, and preparing food.
Look at that feast!
Last year a pileated woodpecker pecked all these holes in this log. Now they're a perfect place to hide treasures!
On Tuesday mornings for the next six weeks Emily Hartz from BEEC (Bonnyvale Environmental Education Center) will join our class for a little nature-based lesson and some play. Here students are caching acorns, sleeping for a little while, then going to see if they can find their cache.
An author hard at work.
Lots of teamwork, trial and error getting these round blocks to roll down the ramp into the bucket.
We read the book Rosie's Walk and then acted it out. This guy is crossing the pond!
This crew noticed that our table was really tippy, so they worked together to stabilize it. They called it the "Tippy Table Challenge."
Another author hard at work.
The woodworking table has been very busy - this girl is hammering together a mouse trap!
Chippy has been very busy stealing acorns from our shed - can you spy him in this picture?
