Mystery Solved! (we think...)

It seems as though we're having a true winter! Our cold temps and wind forced us inside for much of Friday where we explored all things owls (games, books, even owl pellets!), but we also managed to get outside for a couple of brief chances to run around.

This week is Black Lives Matter in Schools week, and though we've only had one day of school we've been enjoying some good conversation. On Monday Kristine read the book One to the class, about a different colors including quiet Blue and big hot RED. Red bullies blue, but eventually Blue's friends stand up to Red, becoming active bystanders. The concept of helping others is very easy for preschoolers to understand, and their reflections on the story were quite poignant. Later this week we'll read a book about Martin Luther King, another called Farmer Duck, and we'll continue to have conversations about empathy, diversity, and kindness along the way.

A note from our school nurse about Valentine's Day : If you would like to bring in Valentines cards and/or store bought items in their original packaging they may do so. No home baked goods. No sealing the envelopes, please. Also if you could have their Valentines in to school a week before we could quarantine them before they go home on Friday 2/12. Yikes! That means this Friday! Do your best...

Enjoy a few pictures from the week, and be sure to scroll down to see the VERY EXCITING response we got from author Mary Holland in the mail. Our scat mystery is solved (we think...)!

More evidence at the bird feeder! This time the scat seemed to be in tact. A couple of children instantly said "I wonder what would happen if we put it in water?" Time for an experiment!

We also found all sorts of squiggly lines around the bird feeder. Hmmmmm....

On Monday we got our answer from Mary Holland. She sent us a book, a wonderful letter, AND some Eastern Cottontail Rabbit scat! Time for more experiments!

We dissected owl pellets on Friday, matching the bones we found inside to pictures on a chart. Some exciting stuff in there!

We also tackled some fun art projects on Friday. Children cut and tore pieces of tissue paper for "snow painting".

Lay the tissue paper on a piece of water color paper and cover it with snow...

Once the snow melts a bit you can dump it off and...voila!

Climbing snow banks is a great way to stay warm on a cold cold day.
