It's been a beautiful snowy week in Wildwood Forest! We continue to develop our inquiry skills, as we encourage children to practice asking questions and explore their way towards new understandings. Questioning is something that we teachers think about a lot when we work with children. Asking open ended questions, or questions that can be answered in many ways like "how do you know..." or "how did you..." or "tell me about..." help children think deeply and develop their language skills. This blog post is a great resource if you're interested in learning more about asking questions with young children. Check it out!
We had our final visit with Emily from BEEC last Thursday. She knew that we've been interested in the scat that was left behind on our bird feeder and so brought numerous animal scat replicas for us to examine. We had fun comparing all of the different sizes and shapes. Speaking of scat, have fun with today's Wednesday activity. Take pictures and share them on Remind if you like. FYI, when you reply to a group announcement everyone can see it.
Don't worry, it's just a replica of bear scat!
Porcupine
Children were very interested in other animal artifacts that Emily brought: porcupine quills, feathers, bones, and other evidence that animals leave behind.
Building a new snow pile with all the fresh snow from last Tuesday's storm - this quickly got turned into a slide and a tunnel.
On Friday we read Toni Morrison's book Peeny Butter Fudge and then followed the recipe in the back of the book to make our own batch of fudge over the fire. It took a long time to cool down, but once it did there were lots of "thumbs up" in response.
Monday was coooold. We ate our snack inside but by the time lunch came around it had warmed up enough for a sunny picnic.
Chipping ice and snow off of the climbing stump
We wrote thank you letters to Mary Holland for the great package she sent us. Here are a few gems!
We've been playing with fun new wobbly seats in the snow. We've discovered that they can become just about anything!
Keeping a tally of the birds that we see at the bird feeder
Look at how many chickadees this kiddo saw!
Getting ready to slide down the sapling
