January Cooooold

What a week! Thanks to the cold we played inside a little more than usual, but had such a wonderful week exploring a new class interest: deer. In the beginnings of a big class book that we're starting to put together, we asked what do you wonder about deer? Here are a few questions from the class: "How rough are the horns?" (does anyone have some antlers they could send in??), "Are they friendly?" "Do they have special powers?" "Do deer have homes?" This will certainly lead to some wonderful research and learning next week.

Speaking of next week, much of our read-aloud time will center on books that embody different principles of the Black Lives Matter movement. We're focusing on the principles of empathy, loving kindness, diversity, and restorative justice. Stay tuned for more information next week!

Finally, we've had some good conversations about pronouns this week. Many students learned what pronouns are, and everyone was given the opportunity to share the pronouns that they prefer.

Check out these pictures for more details from the week:

Friday art class is a big hit - these kiddos are pressing natural materials into clay.

We had an amazing donation of firewood from Jared Bristol - wow!

These kiddos were incredibly enthusiastic workers in the Wednesday cold - what a great way to stay warm!

Teamwork!

This kiddo was making up wonderful inspirational songs as she worked!

Our January self portraits focus on skin color. After reading a book about the many ways that humans are different, and talking about melanin in our skin (did you know that people with more melanin have darker skin and less melanin have lighter skin?) we matched skin toned paints to our own skin color.

The children thought it was particularly fun to paint themselves without any clothes on. Don't worry, we're in the process of adding clothes made out of tissue paper!

The first graders have been playing in Wildwood Forest in the afternoons, and they built a fun fort!

John showed us the fire truck and talked to us about fire safety, and the importance of having a family meeting spot outside your home in case of a fire. Please continue this conversation with your child!

Have a great weekend everyone!
