Slip & Slide

We made it! The woods got slipperier and slipperier this week, until we were finally unable to enter them on Friday (it was an ice skating rink with tons of puddles on top). That made for some adjustments to our normal routine, and that combined with the excitement/exhaustion leading up to the break we had an exciting week!

Our story time focus the past two weeks has been on Jan Brett, and her beautifully illustrated folk tales. We loved looking for the clues she leaves in the borders of her pictures, and enjoyed the predictable rhythm of her stories. If you're looking for a vacation adventure you can head to the Norman Rockwell Museum to see an exhibit of her artwork, up through March 6th.

I was just introduced to the website and the work of Peterborough, NH based parenting and child behavior specialist Bonnie Harris. She has some wonderful articles, videos, and podcasts that may feel useful in the wild journey of parenting. As the pandemic winds on, this article about parenting during the pandemic could be particularly useful. I hope you all have a wonderful and restful vacation.

Enjoy some pictures of our adventures from the week!

Then we discovered that a pixie fairy had left ice hearts all around the forest for us - how kind!

Ice! This was a fun spot for running and sliding.

This is a tool we use in our Peace Corner that helps children learn different strategies for managing emotions.

We found an incredible mystery on a Monday expedition - a big piece of skin/fur!

This crew uses magnifiers to look closely (without touching) and make observations.

Back in the classroom we made many guesses about where the fur came from. We talked about different ways we can find information, and decided to write a letter to our school librarian Ms. Saviano (all words came directly from the children). Ms. Saviano then visited the classroom with a stack of books about local Vermont animals. We still haven't figured out what the skin is from, but we've eliminated the guesses of sheep, hedgehog, and skunk.

Creative and collaborative block time.

Have YOU tried sugar on snow? Pre-k got a chance on Wednesday with our star of the week and her family!
