Super Friends!

We had a beautiful week in pre-k, and are loving the changes that we're starting to see in the natural world. This week a lot of our play and learning centered on "families." We read books about different families, created our families with sticks, and set up a really fun and dynamic "house" out in the forest. Children helped build a stove for the kitchen, sinks for hand washing and dishes, and even a shower made out of an old sunflower stalk that Kristine brought in! If you haven't already, please send along a picture of your family for our bulletin board.

Enjoy some details from the week in the pictures below!

Some silly time on our climbing stump :)

We read a book on Monday all about being a "Super Friend!" Now we're seeing Super Friend actions all over the place. These two kiddos are giving their friend a push on the bike. How kind!

And these Super Friends are helping with a tricky balancing task.

Through an amazing partnership with the River Gallery School and Brattleboro Art Museum we have a monthly visit from art educator Kate. On Monday we looked closely at some artwork with her, and did some fun self-portrait collaging. Check out the bulletin board outside of the pre-k room to see the beautiful works!

Our "house" has gotten some great additions. Check out the shower (sunflower stalk) in the foreground of this picture.

This kiddo worked hard with a friend to build a cooking stove.

A colorful sheet makes a nice roof for this bedroom.

This week our mindfulness work focused on paying attention on the inside, and finding a quiet place inside of ourselves.

We practiced finding our quiet place by putting heavy stone "Belly Buddies" on our stomachs and paying attention to how they felt while we focused on our breathing.

Such calm and centering work - ask your kiddo how to do it at home!

This slug invited a LOT of wondering. Like, how come it was so long and now it's short? and where do it's eyes go? and why does it pull its eyes back in when we touch it, and how long before it sticks its eyes out again? Close observation and discussion form the foundation for a lot of our work in science!

On Thursday we brought out our counting collections.

These kiddos are taking turns counting objects into a bowl, and checking their buddies work. You can incorporating counting into just about any activity - see what you can come up with at home!

Speaking of math, we did some counting and measuring with our cooking project on Thursday.

We used our hand ground flour, mixed it with some cornmeal and other ingredients, and and made a delicious corn bread. Yum!

Painting with a buddy, always a satisfying activity. :)

Heading to the field for some running and chase games, a favorite "expedition" for late morning.
