Sap to Syrup

Well, sap is running! We've had such a fun time this week putting together a "Sugar Shack" in our dramatic play area (see all the pictures below). There has been a LOT of engagement and busy activity as kids make maple syrup, bottle it, and sell it in the store. Our outdoor explorations and read alouds are shifting to focus on trees. We'll continue in the coming weeks, following the children's interests around what comes from trees, who lives and trees, and are trees living?

Thank you for taking the time to join us for conferences! Don't forget that Monday is also an early release. Other important dates to put on your calendar:

                   *April 17-21 - Spring Break

*Wednesday May 3, Teddy Bear Tea @ 1:00pm - you're welcome to join with your child!

*Wednesday June 7, NO SCHOOL - Incoming pre-k student day

Check out the fun we've been having with all this snow!

There was so much snow after the storm we couldn't even make it into the forest!

Farmer Sarah taught us all about the steps taken to make maple syrup. It was like a real life episode of
Mr. Rogers!

Melting snow means...mud.

After visiting Farmer Sarah we set up an evaporator in our dramatic play center. This kiddo is measuring the depth of the syrup in the pans.

Our Sugar Shack has a cafe attached! This kiddo is taking orders...

Climbing giant snow banks - what a fun gross motor activity!

There are so many branches down in the forest. Time to put together a clean up crew! This kiddo is doing some important sawing.

So much snow she can touch the roof!

An icy birthday cake

So much snow in the mud kitchen!

Rescuing the benches in the fire circle

This crew is looking closely at trees. They even found a teeny tiny spider!

We're just at the beginning of mud season folks...

After leaving bird seed on some stumps we found LOTS of scat. Kristine helps kids to do some identification with a scat and track guide.

Measuring the sap (or "zap" as the class calls it) in the boiler

We made real maple muffins on Thursday.

And then we served them in the Sugar Shack on Friday!

Taking orders

Waiting to be served

A busy little cafe!

A quiet moment - waiting (with birdseed on bellies) to see if the birds will visit during story time.

Have a great weekend!
