Hello families!
This week we started implementation of a 24-lesson Kindness Curriculum developed specifically for children ages 4-6 years old. The curriculum includes children's books, music, movement and other activities to teach and instill concepts related to kindness and compassion. Among other lessons, students will learn and practice ways to recognize and work with difficult emotions. The foundation of the curriculum is mindfulness practice with an emphasis on kindness practices. Mindfulness is "paying attention" on purpose, in the present moment without judging one's experience.
The curriculum is divided into different themes, including the following:
Mindful bodies and planting seeds of peace and kindness
I feel emotions on the inside
How I feel on the inside shows on the outside
Taking care of strong emotions on the inside and outside
Calming and working out problems
Gratitude
All people depend on each other and the Earth
Gratitude and caring for our world
We’ll include more information throughout the curriculum in our weekly blog updates, but you may see some student create coming home. As your child about our "mindfulness time," and the "Kindness Garden" we created this week.
Enjoy some pictures from the week!
Happy Picture Day! It turns out we don't do a whole class picture any more, so we grabbed a friend and took one of our own just after the professionals were done with us.
Our butterfly emerged from their chrysalis over the weekend!
We set it free first thing on Monday morning.
Giant stump geoboards - great for fine-motor practice and sooo many different math concepts.
This kiddos is so careful placing her rubber bands.
Buddies enjoying a book about spiders in our book nook
We have a new classmate! This is "Carley", the firewood baby. :)
Scissor practice with play dough
A favorite circle time activity is "mystery box". Ask your child if they remember what they mystery object was this week! (Hint, it came from Melissa's chickens).
Here we are at our first Kindness Curriculum lesson, learning about the word mindfulness.
Biiiiiiig painting
This little scientist is looking closely at some insects on our climbing stump.
The milkweed seeds were ready for spreading! Ask your child about our fun milkweed run through the field.
Mx. Nina helped us with a fun art project, using a brayer and paint to make a print of some tree bark.
These big pieces of paper are turning into trees on an indoor classroom bulletin board.
We learned about our "cozy cube" this week, and all took turns using it. The cozy cube is a place for kids to go if they need some alone time.
An important digging project happening here.
Our Friday cooking project was a snack preparation of "ants on a log".
Spreading is such a great fine-motor activity!
And the product is delicious :)
